Durban International Film Festival Announces Award Winners for 2014

Durban International Film Festival Announces Award Winners for 2014

Jenna Bass left receives her award for SA Film at the 35th Durban International Film Festival. From left Peter Machen (DIFF Manager), and jury members Neil Coppen, Katrina Hedren, Darryl Els.

The Durban International Film Festival announced its award-winners last night at the closing ceremony of the festival’s 35th edition at the Suncoast CineCentre Supernova, prior to the screening of its closing film, Million Dollar Arm. The announcement comes as the festival rounds off a very successful year, with significant increase in attendance with many films screening to sold-out audiences. Festival Manager Peter Machen says of this year’s event: “I was extremely happy with the success of DIFF 2014, and it was very gratifying to witness both the large amount of sold-out screenings and also the huge enthusiasm for the festival, both from local audiences and from the hundreds of guests attending the festival from around the world.”

At the ceremony, the festival unveiled its new statuette, the Golden Giraffe, designed by Durban artist, Caryn Tilbury. Machen said of the new awards: “We are extremely that the festival finally has an iconic award. Venice has the Golden Lion, Berlin has the Golden Bear and now Durban has the Golden Giraffe. Caryn Tilbury’s beautifully idiosyncratic design is perfectly representative of the slick but edgy nature of the festival.”

At the awards ceremony, the festival’s highest accolade of Best Feature Film went to Malian auteur Abderrahmane Sissako’s masterful Timbuktu, from a selection of competition films that the international jury described as having dealt with “individuals coping with ideological, social and political pressures whilst trying to find their own identity and humanity in a world increasingly under distress.” The Best Feature Film award carries a cash prize of R50 000.

Salman Khan beats Shah Rukh Khan

Longest Chase sequence in a film

Shahrukh Khan’s chase sequence in the film, Darr has been holding the industry record of the longest chase sequence.

With Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kick, Salman Khan is all set to break that record.
Salman Khan, who plays a Devilish character in the film, has a long chase sequence that is shot in Delhi.

There are a couple of chase sequences in the film on various vehicles; bicycle, modified bike and a double decker bus.

But this one, shot in Old Delhi is more complicated as it had to be shot on busy streets and narrow lanes. It involves complex stunts like Salman doing wheelie and jumps with the bicycle.

Audiences will get to see Salman doing unusual stunts at some landmark places in Delhi where they shot this chase sequence.

There were multiple cameras that were set up, some on the terrace of buildings as well to get the shots right.

The production team is so excited about this sequence that they are wanting to approach the Limca book of records to officially hold the record.

However, since they are extremely busy with promotions and post productions work now, they have decided to do it sometime post the release of the film.

Refined sardarni to a rough ‘n’ tough one

“Although I am a sardarni since I was born and brought up in Delhi, I’d say I am refined sardarni. However, in the film I had to play a rough sardarni, so I had to work on my body language and accent,: she says. To get the act right, she got help from none other than her own parents. “I didn’t really inform them that I am using their usual pet dialogues until I actually did. I always had in mind that I’m going to make use of all that I’ve heard from them since my childhood, and add it in my dialogues in the movie!” says Taapsee.

When her parents learned this, they had a nice laugh. “They were actually happy to know that I get so involved in the characters I am portraying,” she says.
