PINK - Hindi movie review

Can’t a working girl have a drink and dinner with her friends? What about those girls who stay independently, have a career and once in a while indulge in partying with their friends?
Surely, there is a drift towards the thinking of society towards independent minded girls. It is evident in the metros. Yet, a section of the feudal society still labels them as ‘characterless girls’.
Shoojit Sircar’s PINK, a social thriller film depicts the story of three girls who share an apartment in Delhi. They are career minded professionals, the modern age females.
National Award winning director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury narrates the story of three Delhi-based girls, and a yesteryear’s’ big league lawyer, and how their paths cross. The film also explores the dubious morals of today’s times.

Bhoothnath Returns – Film Review

Rating: ***

The friendly ghost is out to set things right in this country

A sequel to 2008 film Bhoothnath, features Amitabh Bachchan as Bhoothnath, the ghost who is mocked by everyone when he enters the Bhoothworld. He is questioned about his abilities as a ghost as he could not even scare a child when he was on earth.

Humiliated and tired of the mockery in the Bhoothworld, Bhoothnath requests the incharge of that world to give him one more chance to come to earth as a ghost and he promises that he would be successful in scaring some children, and clear out the mockery he faces in the ghost world.

After persuasion, he gets a chance to complete his unfinished task as a ghost and so Bhoothnath comes to earth again. This time he lands in Dharavi area, a slum in Mumbai. Unfortunately for him, a boy – Akhrot (Parth Bhalerao) can see him, not the other kids. No one around, not even Akhrot’s mother (Usha Jadhav) can see Bhoothnath.

Bhoothnath returns is fascinating, breezy, captivating and full of pleasurable moments in the first half. Post interval the film is loaded with heavy fundas such as how an eligible politician is to be elected, sermons on governance and the style of living. The message is well-intentioned, however it turns serious with grim turn of events in the latter half. The fun and comedy of the initial part are lacking in the second half.

Satyagraha - Bollywood film review

Prakash Jha’s ‘Satyagraha’ is the story of a son who yearns for a father. Of a father, who grieves for his lost son. Of a young woman who fights so hard with life that she has forgotten to love. Of an ambitious rabble-rouser, for whom action is the knee-jerk mantra.

It is the story of how these four discover one another, and come together to raise hell, shaking the powers that be to their very roots!

But, Satyagraha is also the story of an influential power-hungry despot who will stop at nothing to destroy them.

The story revolves around Dwarka Anand (Amitabh Bachchan), a retired teacher, is an idealistic man, somewhere in the heartland of India. He is a satyavadi and believes that one should give back to the society, the country, all they have given to us.

His son Akhilesh is an civil engineer who dream is to build the best fly over in the country. Akhilesh’s friend Manav (Ajay Devgan) has come to stay at their place. Manav is an ambitious capitalist, and the retired school teacher is averse to this youth’s capitalist dreams…

Akhilesh dies in an accident. The Home Minister of the state (Manoj Bajpai) announces an amount of compensation of Rs 25 Lakhs to his bereaved family. His wife Sumitra (Amrita Rao) wants to set up a local school in her city, gets sick of her visits to the collector’s office to collect the amount. Dwarka Anand visits the Collector’s office, and is incensed with this laid back attitude. The old man ends up as him slapping the Collector.
